Nicholas's Pulmonary Doc is suggesting that maybe removing tonsils and adenoids could help with his darth vador breathing, also botox injections for the secretions.  Has anyone else been told this or has anyone gone thru this with their child?

Thanks

Benda

Hi Brenda,

Yes, Ben has had his adenoids out for the same reason, it has greatly improved his breathing. Where as before his snorting was almost deafining, now there is almost no snorting.Laughing

Thanks for the information.  Were Bens Adenoids enlarged?  Nicholas's tonsils and adenoids are normal, so having them removed is out of the question.  So still searching for a way to help get his secretions under control.  He will be getting a GJ tube next month.  Now he has an ND tube to see if he will be able to handle feds thru the J, so far so good.  He's not happy about the tube up his nose, which I can't blame him.  With the GJ tube we hope that he will gain weight.  He turned 12 on July 2nd and only weighs 42 pounds.  Are there any other children having trouble gaining weight?  If so what are the Doctors suggesting?

Yes, we had botox done when Sarp was 8 months old. He was having pneumonia at that time and we got rid of the secretions for 3 months. After 3 months he started to have secretations again. This botox operation is recommended every 6 months.
I can say that it was good for him to get rid of the secretions when he is having pneumonia however after a short time he started to have the secretations again.
By the way, our swallowing therapist got very angry when he heart that we had botox, because he is trying to teach Sarp to swallow his secreations. I think he suceeded to teach because Sarp is controlling the secreations for a long time.

Hi

Ben's Mum here, yes Ben's adenoids were huge.  Ben has sucessful bottox in his joints to help his stiffness, this works really well for him and he is having it done again later this week, but it has not as yet been recommended for his secretions.  It was suggested that we have it in his jaw to help reduce the tension he gets there but we didn't want to risk it as his swallow reflex is not very good.

Best wishes

Sally

ps

I meant to say Ben was always low weight even with a GJ tube but he has had a J tube since December and for the first time in his life we have had to reduce his feed because he has gained lots of weight.
